When I met Joan, it was clear that she was the most socially connected, clever, charming, upbeat, goodnatured, kind and inclusive reporter in the two rivers. Creating the people page and making her our principal editor, photographer and ambassador was a no brainer. She was and is the best.

From the moment I met her I just thought Joan was a captivating individual. I used to follow her around at events and watch what she did, and I thought, in my next life, I want to come back as Joan Lucky.

It’s probably fair to say that if you live in the two river area and you haven’t met Joan Lucky, you probably don’t get out enough. We depend on Joan to fill us in on whatever event took place last night or last weekend: who was there, what they were wearing, what they were saying, and why it mattered. No matter how many summer parties and winter balls, spring galas and autumn festivals she has covered, Joan does it all with great charm and great humor. “It was a hoot,” she’ll tell us. And so is working with Joan.

Joan Lucky grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa, graduated from DePauw University and taught school for five years. Her volunteer experiences included President of the Junior League of Monmouth County, Chairman of the State Council of the 8 Junior Leagues of New Jersey, Co-Chairman of the Lochmere Designer Showhouse, President of the Fair Haven PTA, and RFH Home and School Association.
For ten years she hosted and produced a half-hour television show on Storer Cable channel 8. “The Monmouth Journal with Joan Lucky” was a TV magazine show focusing on special events, prominent visitors to the area, and charity and community events. (For two years before this, she worked behind the scenes, assisting the host of the cable show “Getting to Know You” doing research, etc.) On the Monmouth Journal, Joan interviewed such prominent area people as governor candidates, speakers such as Dr Lee Salk, former US Ambassador to Denmark Kathryn Elkus White, three Monmouth University presidents, etc.
One of her last interviews before Storer Cable was sold to Comcast was with television journalist Geraldo Rivera at his home on the Navesink River about his television career, the book he had written, and his decision to move to Monmouth County. He hired Joan to be a Two River Times people page editor showing “who is doing what in Monmouth County.” Over the 15 years since, she has been in charge of one to four pages in the Two River Times every week – covering events, people, and organizations in our area. She has also participated in several “Women in the Media” panels.
Today she serves on the boards of the Monmouth Museum, the Family and Children’s Service, and the Two River Film Festival. Last year she was awarded the “Volunteer of the Year” award by the Volunteer Center of Monmouth County.
Joan lives in Fair Haven with her husband Bob. They have two children and five grandchildren.
