"Soy Andina" to screen as part of Latin American Realities program
in Partnership with The Two River Film Festival
New York, NY, February 6, 2008 -- "Soy Andina," a new documentary film
about Peru, will screen Friday, February 15, 7:00 pm at the Pollak
Theatre at Monmouth University. Discussion with director Mitch Teplitsky
follows the show. Admission is free.
"Soy Andina is a great portrayal of life in Peru, the search for
identity of Peruvians in the USA, and a wonderful introduction to
Peruvian dance and music -- it was hard to stop smiling and moving my
body!" said Bill Mitchell, professor of Anthropology at Monmouth
University.
The film tells the stories of two Peruvian women living in New York --
Cynthia Paniagua, a modern dancer raised in Queens, and Nelida Silva, a
folk dancer from the Andes -- who return to Peru to reconnect with their
roots and explore the world of traditional festivals and dance.
Soy Andina toured Peru with the support of the US Embassy in Peru in
early 2007, and premiered in the USA in September 2007 at the Film
Society of Lincoln Center.
The screening is part of Latin American Realities, a month-long program
of films, lectures, art, music and dance about Peru and Brazil. It is
sponsored by Monmouth University's School of Humanities and Social
Sciences, History and Anthropology Department, and Performing Arts
Series, in partnership with the Two River Film Festival.
