MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY’S 'FOCUS THE NATION' EVENTS
National Educational Initiative Explores Climate Change Solutions.
Monmouth University will join more than a thousand universities, schools, and civic organizations across the nation on January 31 for Focus the Nation. The educational initiative will include events for students, employees, and the public to explore climate change solutions.
Monmouth University’s Focus the Nation kick-off event will be held on Wednesday, January 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. in Magill Common Club Rooms. The Discovery Channel and BBC award winning television series Planet Earth, Guide to Our Planet will be screened. The series explores various habitats including deep oceans, deserts, shallow seas, fresh water, and forests. In addition, a live interactive webcast titled 2% Solution will allow audience members to join Stanford University climate scientist Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins, green jobs pioneer Van Jones, and youth climate leaders for a discussion of global warming solutions. Audiences can weigh in with cell phone voting.
On Thursday, January 31, Focus the Nation events will be held throughout the day. From 10 to 11:15 a.m. in Pollak Theatre, a panel discussion on Global Climate Change with University President Paul Gaffney, Urban Coast Institute Director Tony MacDonald, and Monmouth University faculty will focus on possible solutions for the nation, on campus, and for individuals. President Gaffney recently traveled to Kona, Hawaii, in November to give a speech on global climate change at the 50th Anniversary of the Global Carbon Dioxide Record Conference.
Global warming solution activities and information booths will be in the Stafford Student Center from 12 to 3:45 p.m., including: a recycling booth for batteries, ink cartridges, and small electronics; a conserve energy booth for CFL bulb switch and Energy Star Pledge; an organic products sale; a voter information booth; a global warming info booth; giveaways; and hand-outs.
At 6 p.m., Leonardo DiCaprio’s The 11th Hour will be screened in Young Auditorium in Bey Hall. The film is free and open to public, but seating is limited.
